As part of the Oklahoma State University’s Writing Project Advanced Summer Institute, teacher consultants crafted “This I Believe” essays inspired by the organization’s call for people to write and share essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives. At a time when teachers’ values are being called into question, teachers have consented to share their essays to shape the public narrative on who teachers are and what they believe. If you wish to share yours, reach out to Sarah Donovan or write your essay (or poem) in the comment section below.
I Believe in Dry Erase Markers!
By Mr. Chris Schat
I believe in dry erase markers. Yes, those. Then technology that sits comfortably in line with grandma’s chalkboard, my Biology teacher’s projection slides and the computer age. Dry erase markers come in many different sizes, shapes and colors. They can sometimes be used to showcase information, sometimes be used to prop open the door to help a fella out, and sometimes be used to brighten up the room a little. My students are dry erase markers. Some come in glowing, and ready to pour themselves out. Others come in worn, and barely able to make a mark on that day. I believe in dry erase markers- all shapes, sizes and ability.
Mr. Schat started his teaching career in the fall of 2014 at ASTEC Charter Schools as the 6th grade Reading/Math Enrichment teacher. He continued as the Reading Enrichment teacher for the next six years, and received the MS Teacher of the Year award in 2019. Mr. Schat then began a new adventure as the 6th grade ELA teacher and the 6th grade team lead in 2021. In the spring of 2023, he received the MS Teacher of the Year award for the second time. Mr. Schat not only believes every student is capable of learning, but that learning should be an experience. He believes in being a positive role model for students, and that humor and relationships are irreplaceable. Before learning, there must be trust and before trust there must be genuine relationships with students.
What a beautiful analogy. This line captures me the most because it’s true and they need someone to believe in them, too: Others come in worn, and barely able to make a mark on that day.
I love this. And, I agree. non-electronic tech that makes learning real is the best.
